Momilani is a Distinguished School!

Congratulations to Momilani Elementary for "making the grade" as one of Hawaii's 20 Distinguished Schools of 2006!

"The Hawaii Distinguished Schools Program honors elementary and secondary schools that make significant progress in closing the achievement gap or whose students achieve at the highest levels.... Frito-Lay of Hawaii established the Hawaii's Outstanding Public Schools Program in 1985, which elvolved into the Hawaii Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 1988. It was renamed the Hawaii Distinguished Schools Program in 2003. Schools are evaluated by a panel of judges on criteria based on academic accountability targets and acceptable growth in reading and mathematics as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the No Child Left Behind -- Blue Ribbon Schools program is a national recognition program that honors public and private K-12 schools that are achieving in the top 10 percent of schools in their states or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement."

-"Hawaii's Exemplary Schools." Na Lono Kula - The News of the School Dec. 2005: 1.

Waimalu Elementary In the Spotlight!

[As reported in the Honolulu Advertiser Hawaii Section on Thursday, January 19, 2006 edition by Advertiser Central O'ahu Writer, Rod Ohira]

Waimalu Elementary School gets the spotlight for the week as featured in the "Schools" section of the Honolulu Advertiser. In hopes of promoting reading amongst her students, Principal Kaylene Yee has promised to kiss a pig if reading goals are met. The idea, spawned from a children's book "Our Principal Promised To Kiss a Pig" by Kalli Dakos and Alicia DesMarteau, has inspired students and teachers to do their best to promote literacy amongst their school.

In additon, the school is profiled with little-known trivia and tid-bits of interest!

Also, a warm congratulations to Micah Lee for being the featured "All-Star Kid"! Although Micah suffers from a genetic disorder known as "osteogenesis imperfecta", he doesn't allow it to stop him from enjoying athletic activities and achieving academic success. Aside from being an active bowler, he is best known as the news anchor for the school's in-house program, "Warrior News".

Neighborhood Boards - January Updates

"...to increase and assure effective citizen participation in government."

For residents of the District 16, we have two hard-working neighborhood boards that meet monthly to address issues, concerns, and events that affect you on a personal level.

The following are links to their respective websites and monthly agendas. Many of their issues deal directly with the City & County of Honolulu and representatives from their respective offices often-times are present at the meetings to address the issues. The members of the boards are made up of residents who are work hard to ensure the safety and well-being of the community at large. They are your local representatives - next-door neighbors and friends who act as your voice in government.

The monthly meetings are open to the public and participation is encouraged!

  • The Aiea Neighborhood Board often meets at the Aiea Library Conference Room at 7:30pm. The January 7th meeting agenda is available for view on the Board's website: http://www.honolulu.gov/nco/nb20/.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 13, 2006 - 7:30pm at Aiea Library.

  • The Pearl City Neighborhood Board meets at various community-accessible locations, but is also televised on O'lelo Channels 53 or 54. (Please check your tv listings for broadcast and re-broadcast times.)

The January 24th agenda and meeting minutes are available for view on the Board's website: http://www.honolulu.gov/nco/nb20/. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 28th - 6:30pm at Pearl City Library.

Be informed and in the know in your community!

Town Meeting Schedule - 1st Quarter 2006

Every year, area legislators get together and plan themed town meetings that address specific issues that we feel affect the community. In 2005, the hot topics were Traffic & Transportation, the Weighted Student Formula, and Identity Theft.

In 2006, we plan to tackle long-standing problems as well as new issues that we face or will face. We hope for just as strong attendance from the community and any other interested parties as years past!

Town Meetings - 1st Quarter 2006

  • January - No Meetings

  • February 22 (Wednesday) - Housing @ Pearl Ridge Elementary
    (sponsoring legislator: Senator Nishihara)
